At around 3 p.m. on September 7, 30-year-old Tyreke Ellis was reported to be driving a gray Acura near Hospital Center Boulevard, drunk and allegedly armed, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.
Officers attempted to stop Ellis and observed him driving without a seatbelt on and holding his phone in his hand, authorities reported.
Ellis ignored officers attempts to stop him and made a U-turn at 80 mph, initiating a chase with police, officials said.
The suspect repeatedly crossed the double yellow line before losing control of the car and swerving into an SUV, law enforcement said.
Police said the impact of the collision caused the SUV to flip multiple times and land on its roof.
Ellis, who eventually disabled his own car by crashing into a ditch, got out of his car and still refused to comply with police, officials said.
The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and Ellis was taken into custody, authorities said.
After a brief medical examination, Ellis was charged with felony eluding, DUI, no driver’s license, improper passing, no seatbelt and holding a phone while driving, police reported.
He was also served warrants from Fredericksburg for assault, domestic assault and vandalism, officials said.
Ellis was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
